Liverpool are believed to be plotting a surprise move for West Ham United midfielder, Pedro Obiang, according to The Sun. Obiang has been mighty impressive for The Hammers this season and has shone in the heart of West Ham’s midfield. His eye-catching performances over the past few weeks where West Ham have steadily climbed out of relegation zone have not gone unnoticed.

Jurgen Klopp has had Obiang watched and seems to have been happy with the reports given by his scouts. The 24-year old moved to West Ham at the start of last season and has a contract running until 2019. However, with two years left on his contract, it is believed that £18m would be enough to close down the deal. West Ham, on the other hand, are trying to ward off any interest for their star man, by offering him a new contract to sign.

Pedro Obiang seems to have impressed the Liverpool scouts.
Bang on target: Pedro Obiang seems to have impressed the Liverpool scouts.

Pedro Obiang stands tall at 6’1” and is well-built physically. He is a midfielder who excels in defensive attributes. His tackling is such a huge strength and is also good at holding the ball before distributing it to his teammates. He has completed 90% of his take-ons this season in the league, and is a very good dribbler of the ball.

With Liverpool almost assured of Champions League football next term, it would be important for Klopp to bring in new recruits to add quality and depth to his Liverpool squad. Obiang offers something different to the current central midfielders at Liverpool and would be a type of player who can offer a smooth transition between the team’s defence and attack.

Klopp is known for his high-tempo football and he expects the whole team to work hard on the pitch, both defensively and offensively. The signing of Obiang might bring some ease to the way Klopp makes his team play. The defensive contribution would be more from a midfielder like Pedro, who would also be contributing in starting the attacks.

Given Obiang’s dribbling skills and on-the-ball ability, he would very well be able to dictate terms in the centre of the park. However, if Klopp has different ideas, it will be interesting to see how Pedro Obiang may be used at Anfield.
