Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has made a plea to Jurgen Klopp to sign Borussia Dortmund superstar Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Dortmund hotshot hit a fine hat-trick as the German team made easy work of Benfica in the 2nd leg of the round of 16 tie in the Champions League and beat them 4-0.
The Gabon hit man is coveted by several of Europe’s top clubs with Real Madrid understood to be the frontrunners.
Liverpool have played Roberto Firmino up front and Origi has been the alternate option. However, both the players have not looked comfortable and have struggled for form and consistency. Though Liverpool have scored the highest number of league goals this season, the fact that they do not have a recognised striker up front is a sign of worry and Gerrard has suggested that Jurgen Klopp must probably look to sign the Gabon superstar in the summer.
Talking to BT Sport (h/t Daily Express) alongside Gary Lineker, Gerrard expressed his opinion about the striker, saying his movement is what that makes him such a danger to the opposition.
“He’s exactly what Liverpool need, isn’t he Steven?,” Lineker asked Gerrard on BT Sport.
Gerrard replied: “Yeah, but if he’s in this type of form, he’ll alert a lot of clubs – not just Liverpool. He attacks the frame all the time and he gets tap-ins because of his movement.”
Aubameyang is really good with the ball at his feet and is also a poacher when he is off the ball. A combination of these two abilities is hard to find these days and this is exactly what a deep lying striker or a ‘False-9’ must possess.
He is truly capable of exploiting the spaces and can charge into the box out of nowhere, making it difficult for the opposition defenders to mark him.
His intelligence and pace is second to none and he has already scored 28 goals in 31 appearances for the German club this season so far.
Though he is far away from bettering his last season’s tally of 39 goals and 12 assists, he is a consistent goal-getter and Liverpool are only going to benefit by his arrival.
The Reds have not replaced Luis Suarez yet and if they manage to get Aubameyang, then it will send a strong message to their rivals and other clubs in the world alike.
It will be interesting to see if Klopp will go for the Gabon superstar, but for now, it is Roberto Firmino who leads the line for Liverpool.
