Jurgen Klopp is likely to return to Germany in the summer, but to be involved in pre-season friendlies with Liverpool. The club are in the process of finalising the summer tours, which are one of the lucrative means of income for Premier League clubs. Liverpool have already agreed to play two friendlies in the Far East.
They will be playing in the Premier League Asia Trophy, which has become extremely popular in recent years. These two friendlies will be taking place in July. However, more games are likely to come up much closer to home.
Klopp is a manager who prefers to stay closer to home during the pre-season rather than jet out to exotic locations in order to take part in money-spinning friendlies. The German employed this procedure when he was the manager at Borussia Dortmund, and it looks likely that he will stick to this philosophy – albeit making some few changes in order to accommodate Liverpool’s need for financial revenue. Whilst staying close to home, it appears that Liverpool may benefit from several high profile friendlies, as the club are in talks with Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich in order to take part in the Audi cup.
The tournament takes place at the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich. The Bavarians would also be one of the competitors in the tournament, which will be taking place over two days. Hence, this should guarantee a high-profile friendly between Liverpool and Bayern Munich. The match would see Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti pair up against each other. Unfortunately, midfielder Xabi Alonso will not be able to play against his former club since he is retiring at the end of the season.
As of now, the Audi Cup has been scheduled on August 1 and 2. However, it is likely that these days could change in the coming weeks depending on the club’s that are taking part. Previously, the Audi Cup has been one of the illustrious tournaments hosting the likes of AC Milan, Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Boca Juniors.
Such a game would bring back memories of the iconic game between the two clubs back in 2001 when Liverpool were managed by Gerard Houllier. The two teams faced each other in the European Super Cup and Liverpool ended up being successful with a 3-2 win over Bayern, who were managed by Ottmar Hitzfeld.
Michael Owen, Emile Heskey, and John Arne Riise scored the goals for Liverpool in this victory. Another opponent in this competition could be Hertha Berlin.
