Liverpool seem to be stepping up their chase for a top goalkeeper next season. The Reds have struggled with their goalkeepers this season and new arrival Loris Karius has not done well at all.

The pressure of performing in the Premier League certainly has gotten to Karius while the Merseyside club have had to revert to their number one at the start of the season, Simon Mignolet, for the remaining games to go this term.

The Belgian was expected to leave at the start of the season but was dropped later on in place of Karius. Now it seems manager Jurgen Klopp is willing to bring in a top keeper from France and Buzzsport reports that the club is looking to sign Stephane Ruffier from St. Etienne.

The 30-year-old has been one of the most consistent players in the French Ligue1 over the years. This season he has only conceded 19 goals from 22 games and has also kept nine clean-sheets in the process.

While the French keeper is one of the best in the league, the link does seem to be extremely odd at the moment. Not only is Ruffier on the wrong side of the age limit for players as FSG prefer youngsters. And Klopp had recently stated that he would see Mignolet and Karius continue as the keepers for next season.

That certainly will lead to groans and moans from the Liverpool fans but Mignolet has actually been a decent enough goalkeeper and hasn’t made as many mistakes as he normally does. And even Karius is rated as one of the best German goalkeepers in the world.

Additionally, the former Mainz keeper isn’t the first player to struggle in their first season in the Premier League as we can all attest with the career of David de Gea turning around after a poor first season with Manchester United.

The Reds had been linked with other keepers prior to Karius joining and it does seem that the German manager will stick with his pair of keepers. There aren’t many top keepers out there who are available, barring Joe Hart, but even he might not be the right candidate for the Merseyside club.
