Liverpool’s chase for RB Leipzig’s young striker Timo Werner could be coming to an end. The Merseyside club were expected to make a move for the 21-year-old German in the summer but the striker has come out and stated that he is happy at the Bundesliga club and wants to develop there.
“I want to keep growing together with RB Leipzig and keep developing here,” he told Welt (via Liverpool Echo) on Sunday.
“I am still only 21 years old and still have plenty of years ahead of me.
“I am very happy at Leipzig. Joining this club has been a stroke of luck. I have found my way again under Ralph Hasenhuttl.”
The German was seen as an ideal replacement for Daniel Sturridge and is known to play for a club that does a lot of high-pressing. Leipzig are also known for their counter-attacking football and that has allowed the German to score 14 goals in 24 appearances in the league.
Werner can play as a striker and out wide and his work ethic is something that would have helped Liverpool next season. The Reds though could still nab a few other players from the rising stars of the Bundesliga.
Naby Keita is the latest player to be linked with the Merseyside club and the midfielder is dubbed as the next N’Golo Kante. Another player that had been rumoured to join the Reds in the winter window was Emil Forsberg.
The Swede was in great form at the start of the season and was touted as someone who could have done a great job especially during the month of January when Liverpool struggled. While Forsberg is another player who is sticking at Leipzig, Keita certainly would do a great job in the heart of the park for the Reds.
Keita is a battling midfielder and could be the missing link for the Reds next season. They do need a quality forward as Sturridge is surely set to leave and Jurgen Klopp would have to use every bit of his experience in getting the perfect player for his system.
He hasn’t spent a lot of money in his first summer transfer window but the German will have to break the bank if Liverpool are to compete for the Premier League title.
