Mamadou Sakho’s Liverpool future is still in the doldrums after Jurgen Klopp recently stated that the French defender doesn’t have a fixed price in his loan deal with Crystal Palace.
The former PSG man didn’t play any first-team games since the start of the season after a falling out with Klopp but has resurrected his career at Palace under Sam Allardyce.
The Frenchman has helped Palace claim 15 points from their last six games and played starring roles in the wins against Arsenal and Chelsea. Sakho is a player that Allardyce would want to sign in the summer and the latest update from Klopp could hasten the deal up.
Speaking to reporters at Melwood, the German manager was quoted by the Liverpool Echo when asked if there is any clause in Sakho’s loan deal that allowed Palace to make the deal a permanent one. He said:
“There is no clause in the loan contract.”
While that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Frenchman will be sold in the summer, it doesn’t bode well for him either. The Reds have been in the news for tracking Virgil van Dijk and Kostas Manolas as replacements and it would be a major surprise if Sakho found himself playing for the Merseyside club in the summer.
Sakho certainly seems to be a better bet than Ragnar Klavan or even Dejan Lovren at the moment but Klopp isn’t a manager who will back down from a decision taken and the Frenchman will have to put up more miraculous performances if he is to stay at Anfield.
The first thing he could do is help his current side avoid relegation. Palace have shown that they can do well at the back and Sakho has helped them to a number of clean sheets as well, something that the Reds could have done with.
The former PSG man certainly deserves another chance next season and if Klopp and Sakho can bury the hatchet, it would be great for Liverpool to have the Mama back in their back four.
