Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool have been given a massive boost in pursuit of star defender Virgil van Dijk after it was reported that Southampton are in pursuit of Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson to replace the Dutchman.

The Reds have long been linked with Virgil van Dijk and it was believed that the defender is rated at £50million.

With Southampton moving for a replacement, this might very well be the case of Van Dijk leaving the club in the summer and there is a good possibility of Anfield being his destination.

Liverpool have struggled defensively this season and they need to tighten things up at the back. They have conceded 40 goals at the back while they have scored an amazing 69 goals in the league this season, which is the highest in the league. However, their 40 goals conceded is also the highest, but among the top-6 teams in the table.

This will be an area of concern for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who were in the thick of the things until their downfall in January. Lovren, Matip and Klavan have all been utilised by Klopp but he would know that the Reds need more quality at the back in order to become genuine title contenders.

The Kop Times Verdict

It would be difficult for Saints to turn down an offer of this size and hence the Reds stand a good chance of landing the defender in the summer. With Liverpool in a good position to finish in the top-4, Van Dijk might get attracted at the prospect of playing in the Champions League.

Liverpool may find it easier to sign players in the summer if they manage to finish in the top-4 and that could completely initiate a string of good things to happen at Anfield. Klopp seems to be on the verge of making Liverpool as title contenders next season and it might very well begin with the purchase of a certain Dutchman named Virgil van Dijk.
