Liverpool’s preseason plans for next season are already getting set up with their place in the Champions League still up for grabs. The Liverpool Echo reports that the Merseyside club will face off a number of European giants in this summer’s Audi Cup.
The four-team tournament will be held at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, where the newly crowned Bundesliga champions will look to defend their title.
The tournament will reportedly take place right after Liverpool’s tour of Asia and the Reds will face some tough teams apart from Bayern, as AC Milan and Atletico Madrid are expected to join the Reds and Bavarians in the biennial event.
Milan and Bayern have played in every Audi Cup since it was first held in 2009 and the German side has won the tournament thrice. Barcelona is the only other team to have picked up the title while the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham are the other English participants to have played in the competition.
The Audi Cup will be held over two days with the semi-finals taking place on August 1 while the final and the third/fourth place play-off will be held on August 2.
This could be a great chance for Jurgen Klopp to try out any new signings that he may make and also provide some of the academy players a chance to prove their ability in the pre-season.
The German manager does have a few great memories of his clashes with Bayern and will hope for more high-profile clashes in the coming season as he looks to take Liverpool into the Champions League.
Bayern won the previous edition of the competition by defeating Real Madrid. Pre-season might not always give a clear indication of how well the team will do in the coming games but a good showing at the Allianz Arena should give the team a lot of confidence for the season ahead.
