Liverpool Chief Officer Offers Huge Stadium Update – Another £40m To Be Spent On Anfield Expansion

Liverpool are planning to further expand Anfield after having completed work on the Main Stand this season. The Reds had invested £110 million for the addition of 8,500 seats to take the capacity of Anfield to 54,000.

And now the Liverpool Echo reports that a second development phase is being planned by the Merseyside giants with £40 million to £45 million being earmarked to increase the capacity by another 5,000 seats, although the Reds would want to touch the 60,000 mark.

The Reds do have until August 2019 until planning permission expires and this development would take place on Anfield Road. FSG had planned to only start planning on this expansion after the completion of the first phase, which was only completed before the Merseyside Derby, which Liverpool won at home.

The club’s chief Andy Hughes also admitted that rebuilding Anfield Road is on the agenda. He Was quoted by the Echo

“We always said that we would complete the Main Stand and assess its success before looking at any development for Anfield Road,” Hughes told.

“Anfield Road provides an opportunity to further develop our stadium in the future and the club’s position is that we’re going to start exploring the viability.”

The chief also said that the club would follow the process as done for the Main Stand before taking a final decision on the programme.

The lack of hospitality seats in the Anfield Road end is a problem as it would take more time to get the revenue required to pay off costs.

“There are lots of pluses and minuses from a financial point of view,” Hughes added. “Putting hospitality seats in means there’s a greater build cost. It’s a simpler assessment without hospitality.

“It needs to work across many fronts. From a design point of view, operational point of view and financial point of view.

“We are exploring all those things. We haven’t ruled anything in or out at this point.”

It will be a busy summer for Liverpool as there is a lot of work regarding the shifting of wheelchair bays, creation of new lift shafts and bringing in a new pitch, amongst others.

The Reds will also submit applications later this month as they look to create a new first-team training complex at Kirkby, which could cost the Reds £50 million more.
