Liverpool have been linked with a lot of names in the past few months and it is quite natural for big clubs to be linked with moves for players. Liverpool’s apparent lack of depth certainly doesn’t help them escape the transfer rumours and the news keep pouring in the media.
The latest according to Daily Mail, is that Liverpool along with Tottenham are in the race to sign Leicester City starlet Demarai Gray, who is reportedly frustrated at the lack of playing time at the King Power Stadium. The 20-year old is highly rated and played little part in Leicester’s surprise title win last season. This season, however, it was expected that Gray would have his breakthrough but it hasn’t been the case.
Though Gray has made 39 appearances this term, he has played only for 1750 minutes (approx.) and it doesn’t look like he has his manager’s trust on him. Gray has 3 goals and 6 assists to his name, with 4 of those assists coming in the Premier League. He made substitute appearances in Leicester’s Champions League adventure but to no effect.
However, the 20-year old is talented and very few people would doubt that. Liverpool have lacked depth in the squad this season as Mane’s injury almost completely left the Reds in the dry. Liverpool have suffered in Mane and Coutinho’s absence and if the Reds are to make a serious title challenge next season, depth in quality is highly essential.
European football for next season is assured and hence the number of fixtures would be more than what has been played this season. Klopp faced the struggle with fixture congestion in his first season in charge of Liverpool and it looks like the same might re-appear next season too. However, if Klopp gets active in the transfer market, the problem might be solved.
The Kop Times Verdict
The winger with a £22million release clause had earlier admitted speaking to Shakespeare about his situation, and after starting last month’s 2-0 win over Sunderland, he said:
“I have been frustrated like every player would, we all think we should be playing when we’re not. I’ve got to respect the manager’s decision and hopefully I can keep myself in the team. I’ve had to wait until now, I’ve just got to do my stuff when I get the chance. It is not a nice feeling when you are not selected, but that’s how it goes. When I’ve had to come off the bench I’ve tried my best to impact the team. I’ve got good people around me so I just have to keep working hard in training.”
Gray isn’t anywhere near Liverpool’s first team quality and he would only be signed as a player for the future. He is talented, there’s no doubt about it. Whether or not if he has it in him to make it to the Liverpool starting XI is a huge question to be answered.
