Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has handed a massive transfer update that will surely please the fans as it is pure evidence that the club are working really hard to make things happen off the field. It has been a season of inconsistency for Liverpool as we are currently placed 3rd in the table, above Manchester City and Arsenal, both of whom have a game in hand on the Reds.
However, we have it in our own hands to make it to the Champions League as winning the remaining two games in hand would surely seal a place in the top-4. Qualifying for Champions League would be so important as it’d play a huge role in determining the club’s strength in the transfer market and Klopp has rightly pointed it out.
Klopp was quoted by Skysports;
“It probably has influence, that’s how it is. The players we are talking to, because they are all good players, I know they have offers from other clubs [and] maybe they play Champions League or not, or whatever. It’s important – how it is always important – for the club. Everybody knows it’s a lot of money in the Champions League, it’s not only the sports challenge, even though it’s really exciting, it’s also the money you can earn and as a football club we have to do this too.”
The German is right. Players want to play in the Champions League as it is the premiere event in club football. A chance to play in such a huge event is an important factor that the players consider these days. It is also really fruitful for the club as there would be more revenue and they’d also be able to attract bigger and better players.
Arsenal are the typical example for this. The Gunners haven’t won the league since 2004 but are still able to buy some big players like Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, and Petr Cech. The reason is that they play in the Champions League on a consistent basis. If Liverpool can start doing the same, then that is when things will start to change.
Klopp continued (Quote via ESPN),
“Should I go to the players in the dressing room and say, ‘Boys, the better you play, the better the players are which take your places next year’? That makes absolutely no sense. We all know about the situation and the players want to qualify, want to play in this fantastic tournament, as I want.”
“The transfers we have to do around this, all the talks we had are very positive so far, but that doesn’t mean that all will work out. We have to give everything and then we have to see if we could convince the player or not or if there’s anybody else who’s nicer or whatever. That’s the situation but it’s not new, it’s always like this and so I’m not surprised about it.”
Liverpool next face West Ham United, and then face Middlesbrough at home on the final day. Both the games are not a walk in the park by any means as West Ham just recently beat Tottenham to put an end to Spurs’ title challenge. So the Hammers do have it in them to land a fatal blow. On the other hand, Middlesbrough will be fighting for pride and will be determined to finish the season on a high.
It will be interesting to see how things unfold after the season ends, as the final league position is the thing that is going to have the say on Liverpool’s future; next season and beyond.
