Fulham’s hopes of making it back to the Premier League were crushed as they were defeated by Reading in the championship playoffs. That can only mean one thing for Liverpool as we continue our chase for the highly rated defender Ryan Sessegnon.
The Liverpool Echo reports that Jurgen Klopp wants to sign the 16-year-old and is looking to complete a £10 million deal for the left-back in the upcoming transfer window.
An interesting summer of transfers will take place for the Reds as we have been linked with Andy Robertson of Hull City and the left-back could come on the cheap thanks to the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
The report, however, claims that Sessegnon is actually the number one target for Klopp as the German wants to fix the left-back issues.
Alberto Moreno won’t be anywhere near the first team next season and James Milner shouldn’t be used as a left-back further, even though he has done exceptionally well. Sessegnon might be tempted to make the switch to a Premier League side but we can’t see him become the first choice left-back for the Reds immediately.
We should actually look to sign a couple of left-backs and maybe Sessegnon could be the player learning his trade alongside Robertson, who also will be looking to continue his Premier League journey. Fulham and Hull City playing in the Championship would also have an effect on their finances and Robertson could be one of the players leaving the Tigers in the summer.
It is a little different in the case of Sessegnon, who still is young and needs to develop before he can be considered as a Premier League player.
What is certain is that we will bring in a left-back in the summer, thanks to our European commitments. Hopefully, Sessegnon isn’t the only arrival to solve our rather worrying defensive problems at the back.
