Liverpool Ready To Battle Man City To Land Top Target – Will Have To Pay More Than £39million

After Manchester City signed Bernardo Silva recently from Monaco, we are in the race to sign another top player from the Ligue 1 Champions.

The Liverpool Echo report that Jurgen Klopp wants to solve the big “no proper left-back” hole in our side and has singled out Benjamin Mendy from the French side.

The 22-year-old French defender joined Monaco only last summer from Marseille and has a five-year deal, which means that any club wanting to sign him would have to fork out the big bucks.

So it isn’t surprising seeing the likes of the two Manchester clubs, United and City also tracking the 22-year-old. The report also states that Pep Guardiola is ready to splash £39 million for Mendy, which means we would have to break our transfer record if the Frenchman is to play for us next season.

City might have an edge when dealing with Monaco as they already got one player from their side but the chance to play regular first-team football could be the ace we hold.

No quality left-backs at Liverpool

We don’t have a quality left back and Alberto Moreno is surely set to leave in the summer. Mendy would be the perfect signing to have, even if we have to spend a lot of money, due to his attacking ability.

The Frenchman can even play in left midfield and his five assists in the last Ligue 1 season and three in the Champions League provide enough evidence that he will be the attacking outlet we need from the left-side of the defence.

The lack of a quality left-back didn’t really hurt us all that much last season thanks to James Milner’s heroics but we cannot afford to not sign a natural defender in that position.

Mendy does seem to be the deal and with age on his side, he would certainly get better over the years. The asking price is a little high compared to other options such as Andrew Robertson or Ryan Sessegnon but that is the premium we have to pay if we want to sign some of the best players in Europe.
