While Liverpool have been linked with a lot of players in the market, the whole focus seems to be on our defensive shortcomings and stories have persisted about us buying a centre-half and a left-back in the summer. There doesn’t seem to be any problem with the right-back position as Nathaniel Clyne has done enough justice to the faith that Klopp has shown and Joel Matip hasn’t done badly either. However, it is certain that we need reinforcements in the left-back position and in central defence too.
Ryan Sessegnon was heavily believed to be heading to Anfield as reports earlier suggested that we were monitoring the young teenager. However, the latest report from Liverpool Echo suggests otherwise and claims that we have given up on signing Ryan Sessegnon as the boy could 0 join Tottenham instead.
The initial hope was that Liverpool could see off competition from a host of other Premier League clubs to land the talented teenager, but discussions with the player and his representatives proved difficult. The report claimed that Liverpool doubted the youngster’s commitment to a move to Merseyside, and have subsequently withdrawn their interest.
Sessegnon made a total of 30 appearances in all competitions last season for Fulham and directly contributed to 12 goals by scoring 7 and assisting 5. It looks like Sessegnon was offered a professional contract by Fulham, which he is likely to reject in favour of joining Tottenham Hotspur instead.
Sessegnon would have been an excellent prospect for us on the longer run and it is unfortunate that we have missed out on him. Anyway, it is natural for teams to miss out on transfer targets and it isn’t surprising at all. However, it is important that we don’t lose out on too many top targets as the 2017/18 season is an important one considering our recent successes and failures.
Champions League football is back at Anfield and so incoming transfers are a necessity to cope with the intensity and the number of games that are to be played next season.
Who will Liverpool target after this? We’ll have to wait and watch.
