Former Liverpool star of the 70s and 80s, Phil Thompson has given his verdict on Liverpool’s current situation in the transfer market.

Phil Thompson has revealed the positions which Liverpool need to strengthen. He says that the club needs to sign a centre-half, a holding midfielder, and a striker this summer (quite obviously Phil!). We have already signed English youngster Dominic Solanke from Chelsea, who will join us once his contract at Stamford Bridge expires. Whether or not he will be a part of the first team is not yet known, but at least we have a young talent in our hands.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Phil Thompson said:

“Liverpool need a stronger spine to the team, by which I mean a top centre-back, a strong holding midfielder and a striker who is ready to produce goals.”

“I think they’ve made a terrific coup in bringing in Dominic Solanke, but he’s not the answer because they need experience. They also need a left-back. James Milner has done a terrific job filling in but he’s obviously not a natural left-back and is better in other positions.”

Thompson also believes that the Liverpool attack is up to the mark and it is the defence that needs some improvement. He says that improving the defence can turn Liverpool into genuine title contenders. He also feels that Mamadou Sakho’s impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace has made him a good ‘bargaining tool’.

“Offensively Liverpool can match most teams but they clearly need to improve at the back if they are to compete for the title, having conceded more goals than the three sides above them. Michael Keane and Virgil van Dijk are two I’ve mentioned before but there’s going to be a lot of competition for them, although Mamadou Sakho would be a good bargaining tool after he impressed at Crystal Palace.”

The club released an official announcement regarding their pursuit of Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk as we were accused of allegedly trying to tap the player. We have officially ended our interest in the Dutchman and it remains to be seen who Klopp will target instead of the Saints star. We’ll have to wait and see how our transfer window unfolds itself.

Which players do you think should we sign this summer?
