A lot of them have had their say on Liverpool’s defensive crisis and various players have been linked with us over the past few months. While many of them have given their suggestions, it is now club legend Steve Nicol’s turn to give his.

Steve Nicol believes that Liverpool should go out and sign Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin this summer. Nicol feels that we need an experienced central defender who has seen it all and suggests that Godin makes his teammates better.

Speaking to ESPN FC (h/t Express), he said,

“It doesn’t look like they are still in for van Dijk. Who should they buy? I think they need to go and get an experienced central defender who’s been there, done it and seen it. Go to Atletico Madrid and get Godin. You talk about a guy who’s not fancy but who gets it done. Whoever is around him, he makes them better. He would do me fine for a couple of seasons.”

However, Nicol doesn’t think Atletico will let go of the player, and said, “No, I don’t think so (they won’t let him go).”

Nicol, a defender himself, certainly knows a thing or two about defending and he seems to be spot on with this one. Godin is a top-notch defender and a no-nonsense one. He’s a leader and as Nicol points out, he lifts his teammates, which is important in a squad like ours where there are a lot of youngsters.

Godin’s presence would be immense and it would solve two purposes, 1) Fix the defensive problems and 2) A leader in the dressing room.

The Kop Times Verdict

Diego has been there and has won the league title with Atletico by breaking the dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid. He also knows his way through in the Champions League so why not sign Godin if the chance is there?

Although the Spanish side might hesitate to sell their prized asset because of their transfer ban, negotiating a deal for the player would do no harm to us and as Nicol says, we should probably go out there and try to sign Godin.
