We all got excited when we came across the news of Liverpool targeting Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, didn’t we? If you didn’t know, a report on French newspaper Le Parisien claimed that we were interested in the Dortmund striker.

The 28-year-old goalscorer was expected to move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer, only for the £60m deal to seemingly fall through at the last moment. This has opened the way for other clubs to get involved in the bidding process, leading to Liverpool’s name being linked as well.

However, it is not without competition that we are going to get a big name striker, are we? According to Sky Sports, Manchester City are closely monitoring Aubameyang as well. The report claims that Pep Guardiola is an admirer of the Gabon international and that Manchester City believe Aubameyang could be a huge boost to their ranks.

Although it would be difficult to compete with the likes of Manchester City financially, it’d be safe to say that they don’t really require Aubameyang and they wouldn’t pursue the Gabon international too intensely. We are the ones who are in dire need of a striker and with this being the case, Auba might even consider joining us ahead of Man City.

Also, Jurgen Klopp’s presence is another major factor when it comes to Aubameyang, or most other Dortmund players as the coach has already worked with them during his time at the club.

The Kop Times Verdict

Aubameyang would surely fancy a reunion with Klopp if at all he feels that he needs a new challenge. The 28-year old scored a whopping 40 goals and provided 5 assists in 46 games last season. Aubameyang joined Dortmund from Saint-Etienne in 2013 and has scored 85 Bundesliga goals in 128 appearances.

He has grown in stature and has become one of the best strikers in Europe over the years. Though we scored a lot of goals last season, it was done so without an established striker in our ranks. Sadio Mane was the one who led the charge for us and Coutinho contributed with 14 goals as well. So it is important that we sign a proven goalscorer to our ranks and Aubameyang would be an extraordinary buy.
