Liverpool have rejected a bid of £11 million for Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno. The Daily Telegraph claims that Napoli want to sign the former Sevilla man but we aren’t willing to sell him for the said amount.
What we want is closer to £15 million and are willing to let the defender leave in the summer. Rather surprisingly the report claims that a number of Serie A clubs want to sign Moreno and that can only mean a good thing for us.
Even the two Milan clubs want to sign Moreno up and only time will tell which team wants him more and is willing to up the ante regarding his price.
The 23-year-old made a move to Anfield after impressing at Sevilla but has failed to keep his place in Jurgen Klopp’s team. Moreno did make 16 appearances in the Premier League last season but most of them were from the subs bench and it was only a matter of time before he was going to be shipped out.
James Milner was our primary left-back and we are in the market for a first-choice player, which signals the end of Moreno’s time at the club. Maybe English conditions did not suit him all that much but the Spaniard did have a number of games where he just forgot to defend and was often caught high up the pitch.
Returning to Sevilla is also an option according to the report and with so much interest for him, the Reds could even make a profit after paying £12 million to get him prior to the start of the 2014-15 season.
This would be the perfect situation for Moreno as he is deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield and is still young to develop his game. There are a few shortcomings, which were picked up by the teams in the Premier League, but he can work on them and get better over the years.
If we can recoup the money we spent on Moreno from either of the clubs, it would be a great deal for us. The Spaniard’s form certainly has declined while playing for us but at least there are clubs that want him and hopefully he can fulfil his potential elsewhere.
