Suarez - Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker and Barcelona hitman Luis Suarez has revealed that he never believed he would get the chance to play for a team like Liverpool, during an interview with the club’s official website.

The Uruguayan represented Liverpool between 2011 and 2014. He only won the League Cup during his time at Anfield but his performances were exceptional. His form was so impressive, that he won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award.

In 2014, after a second biting incident at the World Cup in Brazil, Suarez was sold to Barcelona by the Reds. At the Nou Camp, he has enjoyed great success. However, he does still appear to have a soft spot for his former club.

“When I was little, Liverpool was one of the biggest clubs in Europe and was renowned throughout the world.

“So when I found out about the club’s interest in me I was never in doubt because it’s the dream for any player. I never imagined that I would get the chance to play there.

“At Anfield, the fans get right behind you come what may. The affection that they show to you is just so special, which in turn makes you lift up your head, rather than letting it drop a little. For me, this is just what the Liverpool fans have.”

Suarez scored 83 goals in 133 appearances, for Liverpool. He almost helped fire them to the league title in the 2013/14 season under Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman’s men falling short to Manchester City in the end. His tears after the side’s 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace, which all but ended the Reds’ title hopes, showed his commitment to the cause.

At Barcelona, he has continued where he left off. The no.9 has already won the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa Del Rey for the Catalan giants.

His comments will strike an emotional chord with Liverpool supporters, who are desperate for Suarez to return. In reality, though, that seems unlikely. He looks set to remain at Barcelona for a few years yet.

Liverpool haven’t won a single trophy since Suarez left. Their front-line is still their strength, but they do still miss his X Factor.

Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge made the Merseyside club the most formidable attacking force in the Premier League a few years ago. Now, only Sturridge remains, after Sterling moved to Manchester City.
