Liverpool Handed Major Boost In Pursuit Of Star Midfielder As Club’s President Gives Up Hopes Of Latching On To The Player

If transfer news were like music charts, this one would refuse to move off the top. Naby Keita’s move to Liverpool has been drummed up so much this summer that there was nothing left in the issue except the transfer itself. But behold, there is still something coming up on him!

After successfully thwarting the advances of Liverpool and keeping the player at the club against his wishes, RB Leipzig now admit that Keita would most likely depart the club at the end of this campaign.

The German side’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick was quoted by the German daily Bild (h/t Independent) that Keita could depart when his £48million release clause becomes active.

Multiple Bids From The Reds

Jurgen Klopp has maintained that he is in the market only for value addition and wouldn’t mind spending over the top for a player he wants. Keita falls in that category.

The Reds went fervently to acquire the 22-year-old but multiple bids – which would have smashed the club records – went in vain. The German side were stubborn with their stance that the Guinean international was not for sale at any price this summer.

This was understandable considering they are under no pressure to cash in on their player and also the fact that their debut in Champions League is awaiting this season.

The club rejected bids in excess of £60 million knowing very well that the release clause of £48million kicks in next season. Ralf Rangnick said,

“Next season it is so that Naby theoretically has the option to go.

“I’m assuming that he’s playing a strong season, even in the Champions League. And then there will be big clubs that are also interested in him. Therefore, it will probably be difficult to keep him.”

He knows that there will be bigger clubs waiting in queue for his signature provided Keita has a good Bundesliga season this year and a strong Champions League campaign.

Missed Chance For The Reds

Keita would have been a glorious addition to our already impregnable looking midfield and would have been perfect for us.

Having said that, we did all that we could apart from signing him. Considering the interest Klopp has shown in this midfield dynamo, it would be a surprise if he doesn’t return for his services. But, of course, one year is a long time in football!
