Liverpool are looking to add another South American to their ranks, well another Uruguayan, according to Corriere dello Sport (h/t Sport Witness). The report claims that we want to sign Gustavo Viera from Uruguayan side Liverpool FC Montevideo.
The 16-year-old has been one of the rising stars at the club and has already made 10 appearances for the side ahead of his 17th birthday.
We are not the only club looking to sign the striker as Chelsea are also in the hunt for the Uruguayan. The 16-year-old is a hot prospect, as the report also claims that Italian champions Juventus are also in the race.
Juve claim to have a great rapport with South American clubs as they signed Rodrigo Bentancur from Boca Juniors, who is also a Uruguayan. They also had Martin Caceres playing for them a few years ago and with the club being one of the biggest in the world, it would not be a surprise if they do move for Viera.
Liverpool also have a history with Uruguayans as Luis Suarez turned into a darling for us, even though he didn’t spend a lot of years playing for us. We also had Sebastian Coates but the defender did not really do much with his talent and he had a lesser impact for us.
The major problem in Viera’s case is that South American players cannot sign for a club outside their country until they turn 18, which is still a year and half for the striker.
It will be interesting to see just how well he progresses in the next one year or so and then we can decide to move for him. Liverpool will not be the only side looking to add the 16-year-old but we will have plenty of time to scout him.
Liverpool have done well in recent years when it comes to unearthing quality youngsters, especially forwards, and the latest player is Ben Woodburn. Hopefully, Viera can turn out to be a great signing for us should we dip into the South American market in a couple of years.
