There were two news from Germany, of particular interest for Liverpool, during the midweek. One was about our new signing Naby Keita being sent off for RB Leipzig in their German Cup defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Another news was about the club’s interest in getting the player to Anfield early – preferably in January. This was reported by the Liverpool Echo picking up news from the club in Germany. The 22-year-old has already been confirmed to join Liverpool next summer, but the club will now ask RB Leipzig what it will cost them to get him join Anfield in January.
The Reds’ hierarchy feels that the German club may give the thought a consideration, especially after the Guinean international received a 3rd red card in 7 matches.
There have been murmurs within Leipzig about the player’s conduct as he bides his time in Germany before joining Liverpool next summer. His rash performances in big games have not gone down well with the club, who feel that he’s taking things lightly in view of his impending transfer.
Does that push Leipzig to offload him in January? There is no doubt that Keita is an important player for Leipzig’s season this year – their debut campaign in Champions League and for their challenge in the Bundesliga. However, having a distracted player is the last thing they would want!
Will this work?
If the transfer does go through in the winter, how does that help Liverpool? Keita would be cup-tied for the Champions League following his involvement with Leipzig. However, he would be a great boost to our midfield which has struggled to shield the back-four in the Premier League.
There is a section of the fans worried about his extra aggressiveness and brash displays but the Kop faithful always welcome signs of effort and emotion at the club. He would provide some bite and ruggedness to our midfield which has been sorely missed this season.
It will also depend on how quickly Leipzig can find a replacement and prepare for life without Keita. Should they find one, Liverpool could just get their wish fulfilled. Can’t wait for Christmas, can we?
