Liverpool have started looking at potential signings to improve their poor defensive displays. It is being reported by Spanish outlet El Pais (h/t Belfast Telegraph), that the Reds are looking at former Real Madrid great Iker Casillas.
The Spanish keeper needs no introduction as he is long considered as one of the best in his position. Together with Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus, Casillas has earned plaudits for his performances for both the club and the country.
The former Los Blancos legend is currently plying trade with the Portuguese side FC Porto but reports indicate that the club could be tempted to part ways, to lighten their wage bill.
The 36-year-old may have lost his national team spot to Manchester United’s David de Gea but is still one of the best in the business. After 17 trophy-laden years with Real Madrid, Casillas has joined Porto in the summer of 2015.
Why Are Reds Interested In Him?
It is a no-brainer, actually, because we have struggled to find a consistent performer between the sticks. Jurgen Klopp kept rotating Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius with the hope of finding a solution to this perennial problem.
The Belgium international Mignolet has started all but one of the side’s Premier League matches while Karius has been selected in the Champions League.
Sadly, neither of them has convinced Klopp that they have the ability to establish themselves as the club’s long-term No. 1, with Mignolet again at fault for two of the goals conceded in the 4-1 defeat at Wembley against Tottenham.
In this context, it is no surprise that Klopp is desperate for a keeper of the pedigree as Casillas to join his side and solve his biggest problem.
Will Casillas Be Receptive To The Idea?
Porto currently lead the Portuguese Primera Liga by two points and remain in contention for the Champions League knockouts. They are in good position to qualify for Champions League next season.
Porto wouldn’t mind lessening their wage bill, but the player may be worried about Liverpool’s position in the Premier League table. However, working under Klopp, the challenge of lifting a struggling side and above all, experiencing the magic of Anfield could tempt the Spaniard to move in January.
