Liverpool Await Major Negotiations As Defender Target Is Set For Showdown Contract Talks

Stefan de Vrij has been another Dutch defender that has been constantly linked with a move to us and today could be one of the big days for a possible deal to happen in the winter window. The Lazio man is set for contract talks with the Serie A club as he only has six months remaining on his current deal.

The 25-year-old has been one of the best players in their team and it is no surprise seeing Lazio actually do well this season. The Eagles are just three points behind leaders Napoli, who are also having a great season, and are placed fourth in the table, tied on points with champions Juventus.

Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo) claims that the 25-year-old Dutchman wants to sort out his future at the club and will hold talks today.

It would come as no surprise that Lazio want to keep hold of their star defender but there are a number of other clubs keeping an eye on this developing situation.

Juventus, who are the defending Serie A champions, could look to pounce on the defender should a deal not materialise between Lazio and De Vrij, and we would have a tough time battling the club from Turin.

A Defender Needed At Liverpool In January

Liverpool might have kept a couple of cleansheets in the last two games but we do need cover for our central defence and De Vrij could well be the man to save our season, at least from a defensive point of view.

The 25-year-old certainly is better than most of our central defenders and would add some sort of quality and stability at the back.

While we have been constantly pursuing Virgil van Dijk since the summer, moving for De Vrij would make more sense but only if he rejects a contract with Lazio.

The 25-year-old could get into negotiations with other clubs in the winter window when he will have just six months left on his contract. We could sign him on a cut-price deal to ensure Lazio don’t lose the player on a free in the summer.

It will be interesting to see just how we deal with the upcoming winter transfer window but one thing is for sure, we require more players to come in and save our season from falling apart.
