Gelson Martins is a name that most Liverpool fans would know about by now. The 22-year-old was one of the players linked with a move to Anfield in the summer and for a long time, it seemed like he would be the winger to play alongside Sadio Mane this season.
A deal was never finalised for the Sporting Lisbon player and his release clause of £53.5million also played a huge role in us not signing the Portuguese. We did get Mohamed Salah in the end and that has worked out for us just find.
However, a report by A Bola (h/t Read Liverpool) suggests that we are in for the winger once again and this deal could happen should one of our attackers move away.
The player in question is Daniel Sturridge, who has found it tough to break into the first-team at the Merseyside giants. The Englishman did start in the 1-1 draw against his former club Chelsea but his performance was not the best and it has been rumoured that Sturridge could move away and play regularly to make it to the England squad for the World Cup.
The former City man moving away would open the door for another attacker to join and Martins seems to be the man. The 22-year-old can play on either wing and would be a great fit for our front three.
Why Moving For Martins Does Not Make Sense
For all the quality the 22-year-old has, he does not seem to be the right player for us, especially given that we already have Salah and Mane flying down the wings.
We all are looking for either a quality forward who can do a better job than Roberto Firmino, or another midfielder or a central defender, who can take us to another level.
Martins does have some decent numbers to speak about this season, with 4 goals and 2 assists in 12 league games for Sporting but he is not the man we need now.
We need a defender as soon as possible and that could be the only big transfer regarding Liverpool in the winter window.
