Liverpool wonderkid Adam Lewis has signed a new professional contract with the club. The club confirmed on their official website that the highly-rated youngster has committed his future by signing a new professional contract at the Academy. He has thrived under the guidance of the U18 manager Steven Gerrard and has successfully established himself as a regular for the young side.
Although he is a natural attacking midfielder, Lewis made a remarkable switch to play as a left-back and has done admirably in that position. The fact that he has managed to do all this despite breaking his leg two years ago, is a true testament to his determination and focus.
Known for making waves at the Kirby Academy from a very young age, Lewis is being tipped as the next big thing for the Reds. He is tipped to play for the U23s now and it will be interesting to see if he can break into the first-team in the near future.
He might seem like a young starlet but he is so much more than that. Interestingly, he has spent a good majority of his life at Anfield, having played for the club from the Under-6 level. His versatility can also take him far in life, considering how lethal he has been as an attacking midfielder.
He has managed to make the transition quite effectively and this has allowed him to have a mature reading of the game. Moreover, his skills have become tailored in a way wherein he can contribute equally to the attack as well as defence. This is a characteristic that will be largely appreciated under Jurgen Klopp’s watchful eyes. He could do wonders for us at left-back if he were to break into the senior team anytime soon.
As of now, Andy Robertson is being given a run of games at the left-back position. First-choice player Alberto Moreno is out with an injury and the lack of options has become glaringly evident. Clearly, there is a dire need for a top-class defender who can make incisive runs forward as well, and who better than this promising young academy graduate? He knows how things work in the club and his displays look quite encouraging as well.
It is heart-warming to see young talents on the rise. Lately, Klopp has been quite generous in terms of allotting them time on the field and it is paying off for us. In a world where price tags are skyrocketing, there is a need for fresh, homegrown talent.
Lewis does seem like a good option to eventually take over the left-back role for us. It remains to be seen how things progress and a lot of his future will be dependent on how he utilises his opportunities. But based on what we have seen so far, he looks quite promising.
