Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez in a permanent deal this summer, according to reports in Spain.
The Reds are among a number of clubs tracking the Colombian star and have entered the talks with his agent as they search for Philippe Coutinho’s replacement, according to Don Balon (h/t Liverpool Echo).
However, with Rodriguez currently midway through his first season at Bayern Munich, having agreed on a two-year loan switch to the Bundesliga club last summer, Liverpool could be prevented in their hopes of landing the Colombian playmaker if the German champions refuse to send him back early to the Spanish capital.
The 26-year-old has shone for Bayern Munich on loan from Real Madrid this term, playing 20 times and scoring few goals.
The report further says that Real are keen to retrieve most of the £70million they paid Monaco for Rodriguez’s services after his exploits in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he mesmerised everyone in the summer tournament.
The Germans have Rodriguez on loan until 2020, so we’d have to get them to agree to cut the deal short, through payment, then negotiate a separate deal with Real.
Given that Jurgen Klopp and co. are apparently looking for a summer signing to replace the departed Coutinho, they still have around six months to try and negotiate a deal with both Rodriguez’s parent club and his temporary employers.
We are looking to bolster our squad after receiving £142m from Barcelona for Coutinho. We have already spent £75m on Virgil Van Dijk, and Rodriguez is believed to be next on our wish-list. It remains to be seen whether Bayern would agree to terminate the loan deal but it seems Liverpool have started discussions early to give the clubs the time to arrive at an agreement.
James is due to spend two seasons with Bayern before another career crossroads can be reached, and the 26-year-old intends to soon make a decision over his future.
He told El Chiringuito: “I don’t know if Madrid miss me. I did my work well and with all my heart. I was always eager, and everyone could see that when I was doing things well, I could make a difference.
“All the people who were close to me offered great support, such as my ex-wife, mother… they all supported me a lot and I’m eternally grateful to them.
“For now, I’m only thinking about Bayern. No-one knows what’ll happen in the future. My present is at Bayern, and it depends exclusively on me if I’m going to leave or stay.”
Personally, I would love to have James in our team but the decision lies with first Bayern and then Real.
“He should be the one” – Anfield legend believes Liverpool should look to sign this in-form English star
Liverpool FC transfer news: Carragher wants Reds to sign Maddison
The English midfielder had a fine debut season for the Foxes after joining from Norwich City in the previous campaign.
Maddison was excellent in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend and created several chances for the away side.
Liverpool didn’t sign a senior outfield player in the summer but Carragher believed that the Leicester City man is the one that the Reds should target (h/t Mirror):
“I think he is the one player outside of the top six who Liverpool should be looking at.”
Carragher was speaking on Sky Sports (h/t Mirror) and believed that Maddison is the player who could take us to the next step even though he would cost a lot of money:
“People have been talking about Coutinho coming back, but obviously that hasn’t happened as he has gone to Bayern Munich, but if you are looking in the Premier League, yes he will cost a lot of money, but he should be the one Liverpool are looking at if you are going to that next step up.”
An expensive signing for Klopp’s side?
The Reds have several midfield options in their current team but there isn’t one player who can create chances for the attackers.
Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are two attack-minded midfielders but they aren’t as creative as Maddison.
The 22-year-old has grown since his move to the King Power Stadium and it will be interesting to see how he performs this season.
Brendan Rodgers has worked well with young talent in the past and our former manager seems to be getting the best out of Maddison.

“He needs to be patient” – Klopp believes Liverpool star will be back to his best despite slow start
Latest Liverpool news: Klopp wants Oxlade-Chamberlain to be patient regarding game time
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back to full fitness and started in our last two games.
However, his performance in the UEFA Super Cup wasn’t great, while he did an excellent job in the second half against Southampton.
The Ox was subbed off at half-time against Chelsea in Istanbul, and Klopp claimed the midfielder needs to be patient before he gets back to his best (h/t Mirror):
“He needs to be patient in the right way, and everything will be fine 100 per cent. We only talk about Ox because everybody knows how good he is.
“We need to make sure that he can show that on the pitch as well. When I make the decision that he is now ready then it is my responsibility of course, and the boy only has to try to do his best. That’s what Ox obviously did.”
Ox needs more time on the field
The English midfielder almost missed an entire season due to the knee injury he picked up against Roma, and he will get back to his best after getting more minutes on the pitch.
Klopp added that playing him in an advanced position in the Super Cup didn’t work out, but claimed that things would be alright for the midfielder soon.
Liverpool need the Ox to remain injury-free for the majority of this season as he provides a different dimension to the team.
The former Arsenal star provides a greater attacking threat from the midfield and hopefully, he can create several chances for our forwards.

Liverpool coach confirms discussions to sign former Tottenham star available on a free transfer
Liverpool FC transfer news: Achterberg confirms signing Vorm has been discussed
Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach John Achterberg confirmed that Michel Vorm’s name has been discussed by the Champions League holders.
The Reds have seen Alisson pick up a calf injury in the first game of the Premier League season while Adrian was declared fit to play against Southampton at the weekend.
Andy Lonergan was on the bench for the trip to St Mary’s and we could be in further trouble if either of the senior keepers picks up a problem.
Vorm was one of the best players for Swansea during his spell in the Premier League but his move to Tottenham saw him become the understudy to Hugo Lloris.
The Dutchman left Spurs at the end of last season, and Achterberg told NOS (h/t Liverpool Echo) that having quality keepers in the side isn’t an issue:
“A good third goalie at a top club is not a superfluous luxury, I have always said this. Michel Vorm’s arrival has been discussed.”
The coach praised Lonergan for his experience in the lower leagues and added that Caoimhin Kelleher is a decent option too given that the academy starlet plays for Ireland’s youth teams.
A good move for Liverpool?
Liverpool cannot buy a senior keeper from another club as the transfer window has closed but they can sign free agents.
It will be difficult to find a better option than Vorm given his experience in the Premier League. However, the Dutch keeper would be the third choice below Adrian and above Lonergan.

Liverpool cannot take risks with this position, and pushing Kelleher into the starting XI would be riskier than playing Vorm.
