Emre Can produced a man of the match display in the 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night in the Premier League. Liverpool endured a forgettable week lately as we first slumped to a surprise defeat at Swansea before West Brom came to Anfield and knocked us out of the competition.
Ahead of the trip to Huddersfield, Jurgen Klopp spoke on how his team needed a reaction to arrest the small slump. The team reacted in a very professional fashion, with Can starring on the night with a goal.
Former Liverpool skipper and legend Steven Gerrard was particularly impressed with the German international’s display and offered him a valuable advice on his contract situation. Talks have somewhat stalled between Can and Liverpool over a new contract, with the midfielder having entered the final few months of his current deal.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and if an extension is not agreed, he will be a free agent. Juventus are keen on the midfielder’s services and remain firm favourites to seal his signature after the end of the season. Gerrard, however, gave Can some advice regarding his contract after reports emerged about a summer exit.
“I think Liverpool have made him a better player and in Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff I think they are perfect for him,” Gerrard said on BT Sport. (h/t Turkish Football)
“I can’t make decisions for Emre Can but for me, in his shoes, I would be a bit more patient with Liverpool and I would hang on. I think Liverpool – the club and the fans – have a lot of belief in him.
“I think you can see that he’s been asked the question many times and if he had decided he was going to stay at Liverpool, I think everyone would know that by now.
“You still have that little bit of hope as a Liverpool fan that he might change his mind but for me, for it to go to the back end of January it’s a concern.”
With Juventus monitoring Can’s situation, the club’s chief Giuseppe Moratta revealed they are in talks with the German-born Turkish’s representatives but also claimed a deal to take the midfielder to Turin has not been struck.
“We are in optimum position to achieve all the objectives we have set out,” Marotta told RMC Sport. (h/t Turkish Football)
“Talks are well underway with Emre Can, but the negotiations are not at all concluded.”
Can has grown into a solid midfielder under the watchful eyes of Klopp and I think he should listen to Gerrard’s piece of advice and extend his stay with Liverpool.
