Liverpool fans will remember 14th February, 2018 fondly after the side demolished Porto in their first-leg of the knockout round of the Champions League. When the draw for the round was made, there was an air of susceptibility for the Reds and Porto were given half a chance, especially since they had not lost at home in their league all season. But that stat was laid to waste in a rather impressive fashion.
The fear about our attack not functioning well enough after Philippe Coutinho’s sale seems also to have been buried as we scored five past the home side. The rout started in the 25th minute as Sadio Mane tried to curl the ball into the right corner of the Porto goal but Jose Sa could only look on in horror as he let the ball slip through and into the net.
That was the breaker for the home side as Mohamed Salah then got into the act after he controlled a James Milner rebound off the post. The Egyptian displayed supreme control as he flicked the ball over the keeper, controlled it with his head and then calmly slotted into the goal for his 30th of the season.
Mane got his second of the game from another brilliant move as he slammed home a save from Sa while Roberto Firmino was not going to miss out as he latched onto a pass from the brilliant Milner to make it four.
The former Southampton man, Mane, has been criticised for not reaching the heights from last season but he got his hat-trick in the 85th minute with a thundering shot from outside the box and completed an incredible night for the Reds.
This surely is one step into the quarter-finals of the competition and if we play in this fashion for the rest of the tournament, nobody would want to face us.
Twitter was lit up with great reactions and here are some of the best.
All players have the odd dip in form, but it’s whether they let that turn into a slump, or keep their chin up and show some grit – never doubted you Sadio.
Looked as fierce as ever against Porto.

City smash a team from an unfashionable league (Basel) away from home and they’re the best team in Europe.
We do the same and it’s because they (Porto) were so terrible. Go figure.#LFC

VVD is going to be our rock. That was his CL debut. Fucking brilliant and this was the first time you could notice a raised level with the rest of the defence too. All four were excellent today, covered each other and got support too.
What a huge victory that is for #LFC.

Until this evening our record for winning away in Portugal was twice. The two times we’ve done that in previous years, we have gone on to win the Champions League. We beat a Portugese team again tonight….Just saying! ⚽️ #LFC pic.twitter.com/XoL2Y7BFN6

The highlight of the game for me is Karius coming out to get the ball, and grabbing van Dijk’s head instead. pic.twitter.com/UA6AqpWN8q
