Netherlands international Kevin Strootman says he is happy at AS Roma but admits his future is still uncertain amidst Liverpool links. As per Calciomercato, Liverpool are one of the many clubs interested in signing Strootman in the summer.
Liverpool lost playmaker Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona last month and could see midfielder Emre Can depart as well once his contract expires in July. The exit of Can would certainly create a void in central midfield despite Naby Keita’s imminent arrival from Leipzig.
Following the sale of Coutinho, the Reds have a hefty chunk of money to spend in the summer and Jurgen Klopp is expected to bring in the Brazilian’s replacement before addressing the midfield area. Strootman, who has been linked with a move to Anfield, has broken his silence on his future.
“I’ve recently signed a contract extension and I want to stay here for long. Roma have been waiting for me and I want to play Champions League next season. I hope we’ll finish among the top four clubs even if it’s a shame not to be in race for the title,” Strootman was quoted by Calciomercato.
“You never know what can happen in football. Maybe Roma prefer the money but I am happy to be here and that’s why I signed a new contract. After my injuries the club have always supported me, right now I am not thinking of leaving this club.”
The Dutchman, who has a €45m release clause in his contract admitted Roma are different to Napoli and Juventus, who aren’t forced to sell their best players.
“Roma aren’t a club who only buy players. Every now and then they have to sell, which is different to Napoli and Juventus, who aren’t forced to sell,” he added.
“We have lost Salah, Rudiger and Paredes, before them Pjanic and Benatia. I have a lot of faith in the project that (President James) Pallotta and (director of sport) Monchi are building, but it is different to the other teams in Italy.”
It looks to be seen how genuine Liverpool’s interest in the Dutch midfielder is. Strootman has undergone a turbulent time due to injuries but now as he has attained full fitness, Liverpool could have a go in the summer.
