According to the Independent, we are interested in signing Victor Wanyama from Tottenham. After arriving at Tottenham from Southampton 18 months ago, Wanyama has gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League but has sadly been limited to just 9 Premier League appearances this season due to injury.
He has been used more as an impact substitute this season with Mauricio Pochettino preferring to use Eric Dier in midfield alongside the in-form Mousa Dembele. Last season, however, Wanyama was one of Spurs’ main players as they came second in the League. He went on to make 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 5 goals.
The absence of the Kenyan international has been evident in the performances of Tottenham this season as they are currently struggling for consistency. With Emre Can set to leave us at the end of the season and likely join Juventus, we are looking at bringing in Wanyama as the German’s replacement.
Given that we clearly need quality midfielders in order to challenge for the Premier League as well as major honours next season, Wanyama would be a good addition.
Steven Gerrard also believes that Wanyama would fit in well under Klopp and earlier said:
“A Wanyama-type player who does sit in and is disciplined, and he would give more protection to the back four. Emre Can’s leaving, obviously Keita’s coming in. But Keita is a No 8, Keita is a dribbler, and a runner.
“The way he (Klopp) plays he plays 4-3-3 more often than not. So you can accommodate a Henderson and a Keita.”
While Manchester United and Chelsea have all been credited with an interest in Wanyama, we could have an advantage as many of Wanyama’s former teammates are currently in our squad and they could convince the 26-year-old to make a move to Anfield.
We could benefit by adding Wanyama to our squad and he could even be an upgrade on Can.
