According to former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon, Jurgen Klopp should sign Atletico Madrid star goalkeeper Jan Oblak this summer. McMahon has urged the Reds to spend big on a goalkeeper this summer in order to close the gap on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Liverpool’s goalkeeper struggles have been well illustrated this season, with Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius underperforming in goal. Although Karius has come good in the last couple of months, the Reds have struggled defensively.
In order to shore up the defence, Klopp spent a record £75m on Virgil van Dijk in January. Regardless of spending sky high on Van Dijk, defensive problems still persist at the club and McMahon has told Liverpool Echo that Klopp must land a top-class goalkeeper in summer, naming Jan Oblak as the ideal addition.
When asked where Liverpool need to strengthen ahead of next season, McMahon told the Liverpool Echo:
“A goalkeeper. Liverpool need a world-class goalkeeper, 100%. Jan Oblak at Atletico Madrid is fantastic. He would be great.
“Maybe £50million would get him. That kind of signing could be the difference when it comes to winning trophies.”
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table, battling hard to secure a place in the top-four and subsequently book a place in the Champions League next term. McMahon praised Klopp for his attacking brand of football but also warned that winning titles is the rich club’s priority.
“I don’t think fourth this season would be regarded as success. Liverpool have moved on,” McMahon told Liverpool Echo.
“I’d hate to think that Liverpool are a replica of Arsenal where the remit is just to qualify for the Champions League. It’s not.
“Yeah, Champions League is important in terms of the money but for a player, on your CV you don’t put ‘we qualified for the Champions League every year for six years’ on it.
“You want to put down FA Cups and league titles. Qualifying for the Champions League should be the prerequisite for Liverpool Football Club, it shouldn’t be an achievement. What Liverpool need to do now is turn it into trophies.”
Indeed, winning trophies has been the tradition at Liverpool and Klopp has to deliver it sooner than later. The Champions League remains our last hope of winning a trophy this season but we have a boulder in terms of Manchester City. If we can somehow negotiate City over two legs, then I believe we can go on to lift the Champions League.
