Liverpool handed transfer boost as Bundesliga target’s agent cancels contract talks with club

Max Meyer

Liverpool have been given an added boost in their pursuit of acquiring Max Meyer from Schalke as reports have emerged that his representatives have cancelled the contract meeting with the Royal Blues.

As the Daily Mirror claims, Liverpool are keenly monitoring Meyer’s situation at the club given that his contract is due to expire at the end of the season. Meyer has been previously linked

with Liverpool and his current status has ‘buoyed’ Klopp ahead of most anticipated summer transfer window.

Schalke, on their part, are keen on keeping Meyer at Arena AufSchalke and have already offered at least two new contracts. As Bild claims, it was February 15 when Schalke’s last offer came to Meyer which was a reported

4-year contract with €5.5million salary. The midfielder, however, has turned them down.

It was then understood that Schalke were planning a meeting with Meyer’s representatives but that was later called off by the midfielder’s agent on short notice.

“I had an appointment with Max and his advisor, which was canceled by the consultant at short notice,” Schalke president Clemens Tonnies told Bild.

And when asked if he had disappointed: “No, we live in a free country. If someone does not want to talk to me, I can not change that. For such stories, I’m just the joker. “

Liverpool’s interest in Meyer has come in the midst of Emre Can’s uncertain future at the club. Both Meyer and Can share similar situation; their contracts run out the end of the season.

A UEFA European Under-21 Champion with Germany, Meyer has played in the deeper role under Schalke boss Domenico Todesco, hence it is safe to say he will be a like-to-like replacement of Can at Anfield.
