Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could join Brendan Rodgers at Celtic
According to the Daily Star, Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could link up with former Reds manager Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
Since signing for Liverpool from Sunderland in 2013, Mignolet has been the club’s no.1 despite delivering error-strewn performances. And this season was no different as the Belgian made a series of mistakes which led to a demotion from Jurgen Klopp.
The same report claims that poor displays between the sticks have seen Mignolet fall out of favour at Anfield, with Klopp preferring Loris Karius over the Belgian in the last couple of months for both Premier League as well as Champions League games. The report also goes to add that Mignolet is expected to leave Liverpool at the end of the season and could join Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
Rodgers was Liverpool’s manager when the club signed Mignolet from Sunderland in 2013. The duo narrowly missed out on the Premier League title in 2013-14 season.
The report goes on to claim that Celtic aren’t the only club interested in Mignolet, with the Belgian expected to receive offers from Stoke City, Newcastle, Southampton and Burnley. Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in signing him but it depends on whether they gain promotion to the Premier League. However, the report has also touted Napoli as the favourites for Mignolet’s signature as they prepare for life without Pepe Reina.
I assume Mignolet has no interest in being a backup goalkeeper to Karius at Liverpool and is likely to seek an exit this summer. Furthermore, the arrival of a new goalkeeper at Anfield in summer would completely push Mignolet out of the frame.
