According to Liverpoolfc.com, Joel Matip is likely to require an operation after suffering a thigh injury.

The defender suffered a leg injury in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Matip was able to complete the entire 90 minutes of the fixture but medical assessment later revealed that a surgery could be required to rectify the problem. (Liverpoolfc.com)

The report adds that the operation could see the defender not feature again for the rest of the season. As per Liverpool Echo, Matip has flown to Germany to see a specialist and find out whether an operation is required to rectify the thigh problem.

It comes as a big blow for Jurgen Klopp and co. ahead of the first leg of Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City at Anfield on Wednesday. Matip’s injury limits Klopp’s options heading into the start of a hectic April schedule.

With Joe Gomez out for a couple of weeks due to an ankle injury, Adam Lallana sidelined with a hamstring problem and Emre Can carrying a back problem, Matip’s injury is a setback and comes at a very wrong period of time.

Over the next couple of weeks, the Reds play Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League before two games in the Premier League against Everton at Goodison Park and Bournemouth at Anfield.

The sudden injury crises ask for squad rotation and let’s hope Klopp uses the current options available to him to greater effect to negotiate a difficult April.
