As per a report from Spanish publication Marca (h/t Daily Express), Liverpool are likely to make a shock summer move for former club goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Currently playing for Serie A side Napoli, Reina is expected to leave the club at the end of this season, the Express claims.
Reina spent a good majority of his career with Liverpool. He was our custodian for 8 seasons and he lifted four trophies during that time. Having racked up over 400 appearances for Liverpool, Reina is being eyed by the club after his rock-solid performances for Napoli this term.
The Naples-based outfit provided a tough fight to the Serie A title and they have even maintained a tight defensive record. The Napoli defenders deserve credit for that but one cannot deny Reina’s influence between the sticks. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the goalkeeper’s skills and on that front, Reina has impressed for Napoli.
Hence, it is not all that surprising to hear that Liverpool are considering a move for him. After all, he boasts of experience aplenty and he could add immense value to a side that has struggled to maintain defensive stability this campaign.
Simon Mignolet has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism for his inconsistent displays this term and although Loris Karius has performed decently enough, Liverpool must prioritise a summer deal for an experienced keeper.
Karius is close to reaching his true potential at Anfield and to have an inspirational figure like Reina will certainly help him improve his game and take it to the next level.
