Paul Scholes has come out and stated the one position that Liverpool need to strengthen, especially after the 3-1 loss at the hand of Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
The former Manchester United midfielder was speaking to Sporting Life (h/t The Express) and stated that we need to upgrade the goalkeeping position.
“I think Liverpool know that they needed to strengthen the goalkeeping position anyway.
“Will this speed up the process? You’d have to think so. I think they’ll be desperate for a goalkeeper.”
The Englishman also touched upon the fact that Jurgen Klopp has trusted his players throughout the season but didn’t think that Karius is quality enough to land us a title in the future.
“I know he [Klopp] has shown faith in Karius but I don’t think he’s of the quality needed if you’re going to win the Champions League, if you’re going to win a Premier League.
“We always found in our [United] teams, we needed a top goalkeeper, there’s no doubt about that, and I think Liverpool are the same.”
Karius was possibly the worst performer for the Reds in the match against Madrid as he threw the ball to Karim Benzema for the first goal and then could not hold on to a long-range shot from Gareth Bale, a shot that any goalkeeper should have saved.
The youngster from Mainz was left in tears after the game as he spent time with the Liverpool fans at the stadium holding his hands up and apologising for his performance.
While we need to rally behind Karius and give him our support, it will be interesting to see just what action is taken by Klopp and the club once the disappointment of the loss is gone.
We have to prepare for the new season and there should be a few players coming in and going out. The goalkeeping spot will be the one to keep an eye out for and hopefully, we won’t have to worry about such mistakes from any player next season.
