Steven Gerrard is looking to bring in a familiar figure to Rangers as The Express reports that the former Liverpool captain is interested in Jon Flanagan. The player is closing in on a move with a medical reportedly set to happen.
The 25-year-old Flanagan had spent the second half of last season on loan at Bolton but he has been released by Liverpool after failing to break into the first-team under Jurgen Klopp.
Many will remember Flanagan for that incredible 2013-14 season where he became our first-choice right-back as we narrowly missed out on the Premier League title under Brendan Rodgers. Flanagan made 51 appearances for us across 7 seasons, with most of his games coming in the 2013-14 season.
Gerrard played with Flanagan that season and he would be a decent enough option for the new Rangers boss given that he would know what Flanagan brings to the table.
The 25-year-old has had his issues with injuries in the recent past but a fit Flanagan would be a good fit in Scotland and could possibly help Gerrard’s side compete against Celtic for the Scottish league crown.
It was a little upsetting to see Flanagan be released by the club at the end of the season but the likes of Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold seem to be better bets for the right-back slot.
Nathaniel Clyne is also back and will be looking to claim a starting spot next season, so extending Flanagan’s contract didn’t make a lot of sense either.
Let’s hope the Englishman regains his form and ability when he moves across the border to join Gerrard’s Rangers.
