Liverpool transfer news: Klopp targets as much as three English defenders to shore up his back-line

Liverpool are planning to add more defensive players into the side and The Guardian reports that we have lined up three defenders that can do the job at Anfield.

The report claims that we are interested in Harry Maguire of Leicester City, Jamaal Lascelles of Newcastle United and James Tarkowski of Burnley.

The trio of English defenders all had impressive seasons for their respective clubs and it should come as no surprise that we are interested in signing a quality centre-back.

Out of the three, Maguire is also of interest to Manchester City, so there could be a bidding war with the champions and that is something we should not get involved in.

Lascelles played 33 games for Newcastle and helped them avoid relegation under Rafael Benitez while Maguire is a part of the World Cup squad and played in the 2-1 win over Tunisia.

Tarkowski did pretty well too with Burnley as he helped them finish 7th and the club is set to take part in the Europa League under Sean Dyche next season.

All of them have their pros and cons but if it were up to us, getting Maguire to play with Virgil van Dijk would be incredible. The duo would be able to deal with the physical players easily and can play the ball to help our attackers.

The three, however, would not be cheap given that they are English defenders. Their prices might be a little inflated in the current market.

We do require another central defender in the side as we cannot rely only on Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip to cover for Dejan Lovren and Van Dijk next season. It will be interesting to see which defender we go for and hopefully, we get the right one to shore up our defence.
