Former Chelsea player Craig Burley has claimed that Jurgen Klopp has already told new signing Xherdan Shaqiri that he will not be playing every week.

Shaqiri signed for Liverpool from Stoke City and became our third signing of the summer and Burley was adamant that the Swiss star was explained what his role in the team would be.

The former Chelsea man was quoted by the Express as saying:

“There’s no way Klopp sold this to him in a one-to-one meeting as ‘you’re going to play every week’”

Burley added that Klopp would not lie to the player about his position and then risk losing him later on during the season. He also added that while Shaqiri would not start too many games for us, there would be a number of competitions where he would be playing, such as the Champions League.

“But it’s a squad game, Champions League, all the cup competitions.”

Shaqiri completed a £13million move from the Potters on Friday and part of why his deal was so cheap was because Stoke had to deal with relegation last season.

Burley is probably right, as Klopp would not sign someone and not give him a proper role. However, there still is some hope for Shaqiri as we have seen our manager give a run out to players should some first-team player not do well.

We have seen it with Andy Robertson getting a go last season along with Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold too. If Shaqiri proves his worth on the training pitch, he will have a major role to play this season.
