Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Reds would have to sell a star player if they are to repeat this summer’s transfer exploits.

The Sky Sports pundit was speaking to the Telegraph (h/t Express) and even claimed that all the money spent by Jurgen Klopp in the summer mostly came from the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in the January window.

“Klopp has spent £170 million, but those funds came mainly from the £142m received for Philippe Coutinho last January.

“We cannot ignore that when trying to redefine Klopp as some kind of chequebook manager, or Liverpool’s American owners as Roman Abramovich-style benefactors.

“It means this summer’s investment is unlikely to be repeated without selling another star. I wrote last season I feared Liverpool may never win the league under Klopp due to the financial strength in Manchester.”

The former Red also added that the loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League laid bare the weaknesses Liverpool have in their squad.

However, Carragher was quick to suggest that the new signings could do the job for the Reds this season and they have a real chance of doing well this season.

The former England defender ended with a word of warning to the Reds, claiming that if we do not do well, we would fall behind those clubs that invest heavily in their side.

Liverpool have signed Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri and look set for a title charge this campaign.
