Klopp claims Champions League result had nothing to do with Liverpool’s £67m summer deal

Alisson

Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Liverpool would have signed Alisson even if we had picked up the Champions League last season.

The German was speaking to Kicker (h/t Liverpool Echo) and added that the mistakes in the final from Loris Karius

had nothing to do with Alisson joining us in the summer for £67m.

“The Champions League final had nothing to do with us getting Alisson. Even if he had won it and Alisson would have been on the market we would have still signed him.”

The German further claimed that the negative reactions towards Karius almost led to us not signing the Brazilian.

“And how the people reacted negatively to Karius after the final, by trying to isolate him, that almost made me not sign Alisson and rather stick it out with Karius. But we had to be professional, our job is to have the best players in every position.”

The Liverpool Echo added that the 25-year-old Karius would be acting as the back-up for Alisson should he decide to stay at the club beyond the transfer window.

Klopp further claimed that Karius could step up and replace Alisson should a need arise. The German added that Karius is at an age where he will develop.

Keeping Karius out of the firing line is a wise decision taken by the management but Alisson’s real tests will take place in the coming weeks when we face tougher opposition.

Alisson was not tested much in our first two Premier League games of the season against West Ham and Crystal Palace and it will be interesting to see how the Brazilian performs in the big games this season.
