Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has spoken about our incredible defensive record at Anfield in the Premier League. The Reds have not conceded a home goal in the league since Michail Antonio scored in West Ham’s 4-1 loss in February.

The Reds have recorded nine consecutive clean sheets at Anfield in the league and Virgil van Dijk has started each of those games.

The Dutch defender was speaking to Premier League Products (h/t Liverpool) and said:

“It’s credit to everyone.

“Anfield is obviously a very difficult place to come for every team.

“As defenders – and everyone in the team – we try to keep a clean sheet because we know if we do that we have a big chance to win the game.”

The former Southampton man also claimed that we have a great chance to win if we keep clean sheets, thanks to our attack being incredible.

The Reds have only conceded three goals from eight games this season, while we had let in 12 during the first eight games of last season.

Van Dijk credited our entire team for the defensive improvement and claimed it all started from the front.

“It’s never easy to play through our front three; when you do, you come up against our midfielders, who are always putting pressure on you and never leave you alone. Then you come up against us at the back – and we have an outstanding goalkeeper as well, which helps a lot.”

Manchester City had the chance to break our Anfield resistance in the last game. However, Riyad Mahrez blasted over from the penalty that Van Dijk conceded.

Barring that mistake, the Dutch defender has been incredible for the Reds and hopefully, our improved defence can be the launch pad to a number of titles.
