Defender Joe Gomez has claimed that being at a top club like Liverpool has helped him get better. The 21-year-old has been in exceptional form for his club and has formed a fantastic partnership with Virgil van Dijk.
The youngster has leapt ahead of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren at Liverpool and that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the national side.
The Englishman got a call-up for the recent international break and was brilliant in England’s 3-2 win over Spain.
Gomez was speaking to the FA’s website (h/t Daily Star) and claimed that he was pushing himself every day.
The youngster also didn’t believe he was at his best yet:
“I don’t feel like I’m at the top level, I need to keep pushing and learning and hopefully be in that category, among the best.
“Being at Liverpool helps me with that because you’ve got to be at that standard and if you aren’t then you won’t play.
“With the club being so big, there’s that expectation from the fan base that they want a certain standard of performance.”
Gomez added that he has had a number of setbacks in the previous years but that he just wants to keep improving and learning.
The 21-year-old will have another chance to impress if he starts the game against Huddersfield on Saturday.
