Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum are Liverpool’s third and fourth captains as Jurgen Klopp wanted the players to select a new leader for the Red Star Belgrade game, according to the Guardian.
Jordan Henderson and James Milner did not play against the Serbians and Van Dijk was voted as the captain with Wijnaldum coming second, as per the report.
Klopp was quoted by the Guardian saying that Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana were close to being selected as captains.
The German added that Van Dijk could improve a lot more, and was certain the Dutch defender would do well, even with the added responsibility.
“Virgil is still young, he looks more of a man than he really is. There is nothing wrong with that and he can still improve. If you see and hear him you think there is big distance between him and you because he looks impressive.
“It is good for him to have this responsibility and there will be a day for sure when Gini will wear the armband. He will be very proud of that as well. These two guys do a similar thing in Holland for the national team. It is a natural thing. The boys saw it as well and that is why they have this committee.”
The defender has been brilliant for us since moving from Southampton, and a few fans wanted him to become Liverpool captain now.
VDK captain of Holland but no rush. We have 11 captains.

Big fan of the rest of the squad voting Van Dijk as the 3rd choice captain.

I’d make van Dijk captain now, Henderson isn’t a definite starter and he’s the top candidate, why mess about

Virgil van Dijk being voted as the 3rd captain after Jordan Henderson and James Milner is a massive show of faith from the rest of the squad.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – he’s the best player at the club and the one player without who we’d be average. pic.twitter.com/tZOgtgovMs
