Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri could be left behind as the Premier League side face Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, according to the Telegraph.

The report claims that Jurgen Klopp is concerned that the Swiss attacker could be targeted by the Serbian fans.

Shaqiri was born in Kosovo and celebrated his heritage in front of the Serbian fans during their recent World Cup clash. The report adds that Serbia does not recognise Kosovo, and Klopp does not want the game turning into a political spectacle.

Shaqiri wasn’t concerned about travelling to Belgrade and was quoted as saying:

“I just go there to play a football game.

“It is not about politics it is about football. I worry about nothing and go to play. I had this already at the World Cup so I know I can handle this no problem.”

Shaqiri got a few minutes in our 1-1 draw against Arsenal. However, the Swiss has looked great every time he has come off the bench.

Klopp might not risk taking the Swiss star to Serbia as we have a clash at the weekend against Fulham. Shaqiri needs to start more games for the Reds as our attack isn’t really clicking all that well this season.

The Swiss star scored his first goal for Liverpool in our 4-1 win over Cardiff and could be in line for a goal at the weekend too.
