Liverpool have been dealt a major blow in their hopes to sign Adrien Rabiot as the Frenchman has decided to join Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Mirror).
The report claims that Jurgen Klopp’s side bid for the out of contract Frenchman and Manchester City were also interested in the 23-year-old.
Rabiot’s current club, Paris Saint-Germain, had offered him a new deal but the midfielder can negotiate with foreign clubs in the New Year, as per the report.
The report adds that Barcelona’s Eric Abidal travelled to the French capital and spoke with the 23-year-old. Rabiot is in line for a huge signing-on bonus and us losing out on him would certainly hurt a bit.
Rabiot has a lot of talent and potential to be one of the best in the world. Working under Jurgen Klopp would have been great, however, this is one free transfer that seems to be going away from us.
The manager has several options for the midfield and signed Fabinho and Naby Keita in the summer. Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner have been amazing for Liverpool this season, and it would have been interesting to see the dynamic if Rabiot did join us.
Liverpool have started the campaign well and have a difficult outing against Watford once the players return from the international break.
