Liverpool started Dejan Lovren at the back with Virgil van Dijk in our 3-0 win over Watford on Saturday. Joe Gomez has been the preferred partner for Van Dijk this season, however, the Englishman had a slight knock ahead of the game.
The Reds didn’t miss the youngster at Vicarage Road and our next game is against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. A win over the French side in midweek will be enough to see us through into the next round and Jurgen Klopp was confident the 21-year-old would be fit for Wednesday’s game.
The manager was quoted by the Liverpool Echo saying:
“In the last second of yesterday’s session he had a little knock.
“We thought we’d bring him and have a look at him in the morning. He was 80% better, and that’s good. So he’s no doubt for Wednesday.
“But we have Trent and Dejan at 100% and we don’t have to make that decision.
“It’s clear he can be rested and recover and be ready for Wednesday.”
Although Lovren was great against the likes of Troy Deeney on Saturday, Gomez has been playing the best football of his Liverpool career this season.
The Englishman should return to the side on Wednesday as we look to progress into the next round of the Champions League.
It will not be easy against a tough PSG team in Paris, but if we can repeat the second half performance from Vicarage Road, we will surely give the home side a real battle.
