“I’ve got to wait for my opportunity” – Liverpool star is concentrating only on season ahead for Reds
Liverpool defender Joel Matip has insisted he is not looking for a move away from the club despite falling down the pecking order at Anfield.
The Cameroonian has seen Jurgen Klopp prefer Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk as the first choice centre-back partnership with Dejan Lovren covering the duo this season.
Matip, however, told the Evening Standard (h/t Mirror) that he was just waiting for his opportunity to come:
“I only concentrate now on the season on Liverpool and there’s nothing else in my mind. Everything else would only distract me.
“I’ve got to wait for my opportunity, I have to work hard – this is the life of a player.
“I try to be in the best form I can be and to be ready if I had to be.”
The 27-year-old has just three starts to his name this season for the Red with his last 90 coming in our disastrous 2-0 loss against Red Star Belgrade.
The former Schalke man might not start for us in the derby against Everton, and he added that the game would not be easy.
“You see the atmosphere and then you know that the next 90 minutes it will be [difficult]. Every game is a fight but this will be a massive fight.”
The 27-year-old is a decent back-up to have for the Reds, and he might get a few more games later in the season.

The Reds have an incredible defensive pairing of Van Dijk and Gomez in the middle, and it is tough seeing anyone else start for the Reds apart from them.

ESPN pundit claims this Liverpool star is perfect to replace Luis Suarez at Barcelona
Liverpool FC transfer news: ESPN pundit claims Roberto Firmino would be a great fit at Barcelona
Roberto Firmino has to be one of the best players in the Premier League, and ESPN pundit Paul Mariner believes the Brazilian would be a great fit at Barcelona.
The Daily Star reports that Barcelona are looking for a replacement to Luis Suarez. The former Liverpool star has been excellent at the Catalans but at 32, he is nearing the twilight of his career.
Suarez isn’t the only player to have moved to the Nou Camp with Philippe Coutinho joining them last year.
Mariner was asked who would be the replacement for the Uruguayan and claimed that Firmino is the right man, even if he was going to upset a few fans (h/t Daily Star):
“Just look at some of his link up play and I think that would be perfect for Barcelona.
“I know Coutinho hasn’t done it at Barca but Firmino is a different player.
“Firmino for me does it all. He is tremendous.”
Firmino’s future set at Anfield?
The Brazilian has been wonderful under Jurgen Klopp and the German has made the forward a better player since taking over from Brendan Rodgers.
The forward also signed a new deal recently and has formed a great partnership alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The former Hoffenheim star does more than score goals, as he does a lot of work for the team. The 27-year-old is integral to the way we play, and it would be a major surprise if we think about selling the Brazilian.

Latest Liverpool news: Joshua Kimmich claims Liverpool are favourites ahead of Champions League clash
Bayern Munich’s German international Joshua Kimmich has installed Liverpool as favourites ahead of the Champions League round of 16 clash against Bayern Munich.
The first leg takes place on Tuesday night at Anfield, and the German claims Bayern’s inconsistency and Liverpool’s form this season makes the English side the favourites (h/t Telegraph):
“Liverpool are the favourites.
“They have lost one league game all season and have let in only 15 goals. But when you look at us, we are not as consistent as before.”
Bayern have struggled a bit this season under new manager Niko Kovac and trail Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
The Reds have been supreme in the league losing just once but are tied on points at the top of the table with Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp making the difference for Liverpool
Kimmich was asked a range of questions by the Telegraph and the 24-year-old spoke about Jurgen Klopp possibly becoming the Germany boss in the future.
The Bayern star claimed Klopp could coach any side in the world and was amazed regarding the connection the manager has with the fans and players.
“You can see how he pushes his players to another level. Every player is better with this coach.”
Klopp has had his run-ins with Bayern during his spell as Dortmund manager, and it will be interesting to see how we perform in the first leg on Tuesday.

We also have Marko Grujic doing exceptionally well at Hertha Berlin, but it seems he will be loaned out for another year.
