Liverpool face competition to sign World Cup winner with €35m release clause

Liverpool face stiff competition for the signature of Benjamin Pavard, according to Calciomercato (h/t ESPN).

The report claims that the World Cup winner has been on the radars of some of the biggest clubs in Europe. Napoli have joined the race for the 22-year-old, as per the report

Pavard was one of the standout players for Stuttgart last season and backed it up with his performances in the World Cup.

The Frenchman can play as a right-back or a central defender and would be a great addition to the Reds. The report adds that the 22-year-old has a release clause of €35m, which is peanuts compared to some of the transfer fees being splashed out.

Liverpool have a quality central defender in Virgil van Dijk, and Joe Gomez is doing a great job besides him.

Pavard could provide cover to both the players but his versatility in playing as a right-back would give added competition to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nathaniel Clyne just cannot get a game for the Reds as the right-back, and bringing the French defender would be a great bit of business.

Jurgen Klopp knows the Bundesliga well and could use some of his links to get the low-down on the Stuttgart man.

The Bundesliga side is struggling in 16^th place with Pavard having started all 13 league clashes for them this season.
